Phylogeny & Ontogeny

چکیده

The hagfish, an Agnathan cyclostomes is the most primitive of true vertebrates as evidenced by its formed, circulating RBC and haemaocytopoietic tissue in the submucosa of the gut tract.(1) Interested in the phylogeny of the IR the authors were prompted to ship from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the kindness of Dr. David Jensen, about 120 California hagfish to explore this question. IR was characterized by 3 parameters: 1formation of circulating specific Ab post Ag stimulation 2-development of delayed sensitivity post sensitization and 3-rejection of genotypically different donor grafts. The authors were particularly interested in the phenomenon of anamnesis. The results of their findings, in the California hagfish, demonstrated their apparent inability to form circulating Ab, to develop delayed sensitivity, and reject homografts. This was correlated with the lack of lymphoid cells and ability to produce an IR.

Ontogeny tends to recapitulate phylogeny in digital organisms.

Biologists have long debated whether ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny and, if so, why. Two plausible explanations are that (i) changes to early developmental stages are selected against because they tend to disrupt later development and (ii) simpler structures often precede more complex ones in both ontogeny and phylogeny if the former serve as building blocks for the latter. It is difficult to...

Ontogeny and Phylogeny (1977), by Stephen Jay Gould

Ontogeny and Phylogeny [12] is a book published in 1977, in which the author Stephen J. Gould, who worked in the US, tells a history of the theory of recapitulation. A theory of recapitulation aims to explain the relationship between the embryonic development of an organism (ontogeny [13]) and the evolution [14] of that organism's species (phylogeny [15]). Although there are several variations ...

Evolutionary Developmental Biology

Evolutionary developmental biology is the study of evolutionary change (called phylogeny) as it is revealed through the embryological development of individual organisms (called ontogeny). On this approach, the understanding of ontogeny contributes to our understanding of phylogeny, and vice versa. Evolutionary thinkers of the nineteenth century almost all held what may be called the core doctr...

Phylogeny and Jaw Ontogeny of Beloniform Fishes1

SYNOPSIS. To investigate jaw evolution in beloniform fishes, we reconstructed the phylogeny of 54 species using fragments of two nuclear (RAG2 and Tmo-4C4) and two mitochondrial (cytochrome b and 16S rRNA) genes. Our total molecular evidence topology refutes the monophyly of needlefishes (Belonidae) and halfbeaks (Hemiramphidae), but supports the monophyly of flyingfishes (Exocoetidae) and saur...

Motor cognition and its role in the phylogeny and ontogeny of action understanding.

Social life rests in large part on the capacity to understand the intentions behind the behavior of others. What are the origins of this capacity? How is one to construe its development in ontogenesis? By assuming that action understanding can be explained only in terms of the ability to read the minds of others--that is, to represent mental states--the traditional view claims that a sharp disc...

A Study on the Effect of Time in Plants

We are engaged in a continuing study concerning the effect of time on plants. The approach is to apply a common statistic, within-group variation in morphological integration, to plants of different age or subjected to different treatments in a search for common underlying patterns. Within-group variation in morphological integration is an estimate of the relationship among variables. Previous ...
